Welcome to the Squaw Valley Fire Department web page. Squaw Valley
Fire Department serves a fourteen-square mile area including Olympic Valley and
the Truckee River Corridor from Alpine Meadows to Truckee. Olympic Valley
is home to Squaw Valley USA, site of the 1960
Olympic Games and one of the largest and most popular winter destinations in the
world. We serve about 1500 full time residents and employees, but during
winter holiday periods the population may swell to over 25,000 people. Squaw
Valley Fire Department Station 21 sits at the base of the ski area, at elevation
6,200 feet. We currently have a full-time paid staff of 13 people and
maintain a minimum staffing of four people, twenty four hours per day, seven days per
week. In addition to the full-time staff, we have part-time paid firefighters
who augment staffing during busy periods. We also have an active staff of volunteer
firefighters who respond to emergency calls.

Blizzards,
Avalanches, and Mudslides |
|
Because we are vulnerable to severe
mountain weather, responding to medical emergencies, fires, vehicle accidents and other emergencies in extreme
winter conditions is not uncommon, and may require specialized training and
equipment such as snowmobiles or a
snowcat. The terrain and intense snowfall we experience in Squaw
Valley also make some of the residential areas here vulnerable to avalanche and
mudslides, and the Truckee River subject to flooding. To find out if your Olympic Valley home is within Placer
County's Potential Avalanche Hazard Area (PAHA), and to
find out more about avalanche safety, visit our Avalanche
Information page.

Space |
Wildland fire poses a threat to our
community every summer. California's unique ecology dictates that the
forests around our homes will eventually burn, and we must take precautions to
protect our families, homes, and properties from this devastating
force. The Defensible Space page will outline the necessary measurements
we all need to take to make our community fire safe. |

Training
and Volunteering |
 |
Fires, vehicle
accidents, and medical emergencies make up just a part of our call
volume. Because of our location at a year round outdoor destination,
Squaw Valley firefighters are also trained to handle high and low angle
rescues, hazardous materials incidents, swift water rescues, avalanche
rescues, and other emergencies unique to this region. Visit our
training page for an in depth look into fire department training, and for
more information on volunteering with Squaw Valley Fire Department. |
